Who likes the new Oklahoma City Thunder name?

I hear a lot of people talking about how bad the naming choice for the new Oklahoma City NBA Basketball team but I think that it doesn’t really matter what the name is, as long as Oklahomans support the team. In a few months from now no one is going to care about what the team name is.

Really it presents a lot of opportunity for headlines, the bad name may have even raised more press surrounding the new Oklahoma City Basketball team. I think that moving forward and praising the Thunder team name is the best idea for our Oklahoma NBA team.

When they start playing in the Ford Center I think Oklahomans will show their enthusiasm like we have for our OU Sooners (sorry cowboys fans).

Just like Shakespear said, “What is in a name?”

What I’m more curious to find is what the Thunder colors will be and what the Oklahoma City Thunder logo will look like. I think that as long as the design team comes up with a dynamic set of colors and logo that we can really overcome some of the nay sayers on the Basketball Team name.

We all know that most of Seattle and Sonics fans in general would bash the name and team no matter what was chosen for a team name. So I say ignore all of the negativety and lets move forward with the Oklahoma City Thunder Basketball team. I’ll see everyone at the Ford Center this season.

HATE IT!!! Barrons would have been MUCH MUCH better. Thunder souds like a little league softball team.

  2. Jean Says:

I agree! I hate it! Barrons seemed more appropriate since we were an oil state. Asking someone about how the Thunder’s did sounds stupid!

  3. Don Clark Says:

I love the name Thunder. There are a lot of thunder storms in Oklahoma. Its better than tornadoes, something that leaves a lot of death and destruction. Anyone ready for a rain dance? Ever heard of a thundering herd of Bisons, Cattle, or Horses.

Sooners, Cowboys, Blazers, Redhawks, have already been used by Oklahoma college or minor league teams. Oklahoma was mostly settled by quarter sections, either by land rushes or lotteries. Barons is a poor name, there is no European aristocracy in Oklahoma. There were no large land grants either.

Buffaloes, Longhorns, Red Raiders, and Wildcats are names used by other universities in the Big 12, Bisons was considered, but Thunder rolls off the tongue better. Tulsa has claims to Oilers or Drillers.

I absolutely think that okc will get no respect for the choice on this name. tell me if this fits detroit pistons miami heat LA lakers and then okc thunder. thats not scary thats not cool thats not anything thats what i call my baby nephew! poor poor decision on managements part. i am going to hate to see what kind of players they acguire if they cant even get a decent name

    It SuckS!!

  6. Vanessa Says:

I hate it also! I mean c’mon! what kind of name is Oklahoma city thunder?? we need a name that is fierce, something that sticks out there. we need a name to be proud of. A name that oklahoma can be proud of… :P

  7. RK Jones Says:

A friend of mine came up with a great idea: Get access to the music from the James Bond movie “Thunderball”, then when the announcer yells “Whose ball is it?” The crowd can yell Thunderball with the theme music in the background. Cool idea!

  8. NC Cosby Says:

Me and my wife both love the name. I don’t think they could’ve done any better.

  9. SNorton Says:

Has anyone noticed that all these new-fangled team names are collectivist, discouraging individualism? When refering to players on older teams, you can say “a Spur,” “a Piston,” or “a Celtic.”. What are you supposed to call an OKC player? A Thunder? There is nothing you can call an individual on the team. Bennett is a communist!

  10. Spoof Says:

In the WNBA, you have the Seattle Storm, Connecticut Sun, Detriot Shock, Indiana Fever, etc. My point is Oklahoma City Thunder sounds like a WNBA name more than a NBA name.

  11. Brennan Says:

I am not from Oklahoma and I have to say I was highly disappointed in the name and color choice. I just don’t know what happened to the originality of professional team names. What happened to the days of the Packers, the 76ers, the Dodgers, the Bengals, the Sooners, the Terrapins?

Now we are faced with monotony and it is simply retarded how boring these new teams are. Why wouldn’t you make something original or something that really represents the region. I’m from Kentucky, we have thunder up here as well!

If they wanted to be blue and orange and have a boring new name when didn’t they just call themselves the Charlotte Bobcats 2?

  12. DJ Says:

How about OKC “Ball Busters” That will shut everybody up!

  13. Evan Says:

They could have at least chosen something related to our state, like the the Twisters or Tornadoes.

  14. Old Okie Says:

Its only the first season, so I think theres still time to chang the name. those colors are godawfull and should be changed to a more basic design like black and red or orange and gray. We should look to the outlaw heritage of our state like Jesse James and such. Or railroads, Trainrobbers, Bandints, Rustlers, James Gang is better than Thunder so is Twisters. People are afraid of twisters. Also drop the city part so we include all of Oklahoma. Grey and Red Oklahoma Gangtsers with six guns crossed as symbol!!!! yall have my email I expect some money sooner rather than later when the team relocates. Thunder is the worst!

  15. David Says:

I agree, I think the name is a poor choice. Boring is the exact word to describe this team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, why would you name an NBA franchise that name?? Sounds like a D-league or WNBA team or a MLS Soccer team (which I HATE soccer)..

I believe the first major mistake was moving Charlotte Hornets to New Orleans, and then creating an expansion team called the Charlotte Bobcats.. What? why didn’t they just keep the Charlotte Hornets and expansion a New Orleans team?? Some things just don’t make sense to me..

Kindof like when the NFL (which is my favorite sport but I love basketball too) when the NFL moved Cleveland Browns to Baltimore and called them the Ravens, great name and all but why did they expansion a Cleveland Browns team a few years later?? What??

Getting back to Nba talk, I guess I can live with the New Orleans Hornets and the Charlotte Bobcats. After their names have been beat into my head for the last few years they don’t sound so bad anymore, Lol. Charlotte Bobcats is a poor choice of name but I do like their logo and colors, and that team has Michael Jordan in its front office, so I can respect them. New Orleans Hornets colors n jerseys are great, and Im glad they kept the name Hornets and the logo cuz its awesome…

BUT, why the Thunder?? I really can’t stand that name, the logo is too plain, the jerseys are even more plain, the team sucks and can’t win any games so it doesn’t help when the team is 17-57 or whatever their record is.. Actually the name really isn’t that bad, its more the logo n jerseys and even the look of the home floor at Oklahoma City arena that just make that team sooo ridiculously boring..

Check out this link, to an image of an Oklahoma City Thunder logo, http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm168/cocajunasylum/OklahomaCityThunderConcept1.png ,,,,, they shouldn’ve picked that logo in the top center,,, true
